Fire on Marlborough Street [1975] – world’s famous photos

On July 22, 1975, photograph Stanley J. Forman working for the Boston Herald American newspaper when a police scanner picked up an emergency: “Fire on Marlborough Street!”
Climbed atop the fire truck, Forman shot the picture of a young woman, Diana Bryant, and a very young girl, Tiare Jones when they fell helplessly. Diana Bryant was pronounced dead at the scene. The young girl lived. Despite a heroic effort, O’Neil knew he had been just seconds away from saving the lives of both.

Photo coverage from the tragic event garnered Stanley Forman a Pulitzer Prize. But more important, his work paved the way for Boston and other states to mandate tougher fire safety codes.

Is Harry Potter Gay? – NAMBLA

Of course Harry is gay. He grew up in a closet under the stairs; only allowed out to be useful around
the house, and certainly never when visitors came. And if you are not convinced, compare Harry’s story with the Greek myth of Orestes. Orestes, like Harry, was born at Lammas, sent away to be reared by relatives, had a lightening-flash birthmark on his forehead, caused the death of his parents, fought unending magic battles, had a marriage of convenience with Hermione, and was life-long lover of his childhood boyfriend Pylades. In ancient times the Orestes-Pylades story was regarded as the paradigm of masculine love, they were the perfect poofs, and given the continuing coincidence with Harry’s story JK Rowling cannot be ignorant of this.

Build your own server – bit-tech.net

In my goal of helping you find new and useful ways to use that old crap, it dawned on me – everyone I know complains about files on this computer or that computer, or not being able to get the things they need or want while they’re out or away from their home desk. They needed a file server – a REAL file server, with web interface and bit-torrent and the capacity to not tie up your precious screens and keyboards, which are (at least in my house) in less supply than motherboards and hard drives.

It needs to be fast, extensible, flexible, run on old spare parts, and be completely headless after about two hours.

Five things you didn’t know about Google’s search – Matt Cutts

Some people think that Google changes a few things every few months. At least in search quality, it’s more like a few things every week. From the article: “the search-quality team makes about a half-dozen major and minor changes a week to the vast nest of mathematical formulas that power the search engine.” I don’t think we’ve discussed our pace of search quality changes before.

Venus Flyby includes Lasers – NASA

Picture this: A spaceship swoops in from the void, plunging toward a cloudy planet about the size of Earth. A laser beam lances out from the ship; it probes the planet’s clouds, striving to reach the hidden surface below. Meanwhile, back on the craft’s home world, scientists perch on the edge of their seats waiting to see what happens.

Diablo 3 at BlizzCon 2007 – StarcraftTwo.com

The announcement of the Blizzard Worldwide Invitationals 2007 held in South Korea, and its one-week splash page teaser got many Diablo fans hyped up. When Starcraft 2 was announced, Diablo fans’ hopes went down the drain. I have seen reactions at different Diablo forums, including the official forums, where fans have lost all hope for Diablo III.

I would say to those fans, it is not over until the fat lady sings. Diablo is coming … there is no doubt of that. The signs of its coming is all over the place. You just have to be sharp to notice.
