Man Accused of Faking Retardation
http://www.comcast.net/news/national/index.jsp?cat=DOMESTIC&fn=/2006/12/05/535125.html
For nearly 20 years _ ever since Pete Costello was 8 _ his mother has collected disability benefits on his behalf. In meetings with Social Security officials and psychologists, he appeared mentally retarded and unable to communicate. His mother insisted he couldn’t read or write, shower, take care of himself or drive a car.
But now prosecutors say it was all a huge fraud, and they have video of Costello contesting a traffic ticket to prove it.
you’d have to be retarded to make a mistake like that…
NYC health board bans trans fats at restaurants
http://www.cnn.com/2006/HEALTH/12/05/ny.trans.fat.ap/index.html
Trans fats are formed when liquid oils are made into solid fats by adding hydrogen in a process called hydrogenation. A common example of this is partially hydrogenated vegetable oil, which is used for frying and baking and turns up in processed foods like cookies, pizza dough and crackers. Trans fats, which are favored because of their long shelf life, are also found in pre-made blends like pancake and hot chocolate mix.
The FDA estimates the average American eats 4.7 pounds of trans fats each year.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who banned smoking in bars and restaurants during his first term, has dismissed cries that New York is crossing a line by trying to legislate diets.
“Nobody wants to take away your french fries and hamburgers — I love those things, too,” he said recently. “But if you can make them with something that is less damaging to your health, we should do that.”
Hmmm…I don’t know about this. Yeah, it’s nice that NYC is looking out for my health and all, but I’d rather be an informed consumer than a restricted one.
Striptease is an art, Norwegian appeal court rules
http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20061205/od_afp/afpentertainmentnorway_061205180808
“Striptease, in the way it is practiced in this case, is a form of dance combined with acting” which compares to other stage acts that are exempt from VAT in Norway, three judges ruled unanimously.
Beware Addictive Chapstick
http://consumerist.com/consumer/consumer-alert/beware-addictive-chapstick-219076.php
the debate is ongoing, but the crux of the arguement is this:
When buying chapstick, check to make sure it doesn’t contain salicylic acid, like Carmex does. This ingredient actually eats through skin layers. The result can be a vicious spiral of lip destruction and product reapplication.
Other common lip balm ingredients to avoid are irritants like sopropyl myristate, eugenol, and phenol.
snopes.com says its an urban legend, but salicylic acid is used to remove warts and kill zits. the skin on your lips is hella sensitive compared to the rest of your body.
go find you some “natural” lip balm. the one in my pocket today contains: shea butter, beeswax, mango butter, castor oil, jojoba oil, and vitamin e.
Warner Music CEO’s Use P2P
http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20061204-8352.html
i know its “old news” but i really like this analysis from arstechnica.com
Still, this shows just how normal young people consider file-swapping to be. When your dad runs one of the largest music labels on the planet and you still turn to P2P networks to discover new tunes, it’s clear that the issue isn’t just lack of access to music. Or money. This is now considered a “normal” way of checking out digital content.
