we all enjoyed our MDR-v700DJ phones. We also learned that while they sounded really good, they were high priced kwalitee phones.
My $180 MDR-v900HD phones are better kwalitee better sounding phones. Though they don’t hold up well to toddler smashing. (I have to re-solder the left channel conductor since it’s flaky now.)
You don’t need to spend an ass-load of money for good phones. You just can’t spend less than $100 or the kwalitee is really high.
I’ve tried a bunch of different phones. I’ve tried the razer barracudas. (crap)
I’ve tried the AKG-k701. Those are entirely amazing, but you need a phone amp just for them. Not cost effective.
I know most of us actually prefer the heavy low end of the sony phones. Since the audiophile quality of the k701 phones wasn’t as heavy on the low end without external equalization, it again is not cost effective.

headroom has pretty much everything for the digital audiophile. You’ll pay for it though.
